MSD Underground services and Raft Slabs

Worley invited us to support the construction of a new international centre to produce animal vaccines in Upper Hutt for global pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp Dohme (MSD).

Through our excellent track record, what initially started as a project to relocate and install services including new sewer lines, stormwater lines, fire ring mains and the installation of a high-end low voltage electrical transformer room, expanded into other packages.

The additional packages included BPC delivering two large foundation slabs.

The first slab included the removal of 950m3 of material and 180t of reinforced steel being placed with 660m3 of poured concrete. We used 18 concrete trucks on turnaround with 10 hours of pumping using 28m and 39m concrete pumps. 650m2 of quadruple layered thermal blankets were placed on the poured concrete to assist the curing process.

We also poured a 480m3 raft slab using two 39m concrete pumps.

Challenges included the tight space between buildings not leaving a lot of workable room, as well as working around the production facility while it was fully operational.

Contracts Manager Chris Hodder said Worley contacted Brian Perry Civil for the first package of work because of the innovation we had demonstrated in previous projects.

We have since completed an additional package to relocate and replace services in other areas on site, including constructing ten 1200dia CFA piles and reinforced concrete capping beams to seismically strengthen an existing building.
