23L Touchdown Zone Slab Replacement
BPC replaced 286 runway slabs in 12 weeks beneath the flight paths of landing and departing aircraft at Auckland International Airport – the first project of its kind in New Zealand.
Construction included 13,500 tonnes of concrete, 5,600 tonnes of cement treated basecourse, 12 kilometres of airfield ground lighting cables and associated lighting infrastructure, a watermain, and cured in place pipelining of two stormwater culverts – all under Covid-19 restrictions and a “displaced threshold”, moving the start and end of the runway.
Delivered on programme, on budget, with zero serious harm incidents, and defect free, Runway 23L demonstrates what can be negotiated, designed, and delivered under considerable cost and time pressure.
