Collaborating for safety

BPC and CentrePort are proud to be named finalists in the Collaboration category of the New Zealand Workplace Health & Safety Awards 2025 for our work on the Seaview Energy Resilience Project.

Since 2022 BPC has been working with CentrePort to upgrade its Seaview Wharf in Wellington, ensuring it is future fit and resilient. To maximise the amount of work that could be delivered, it was critical to come up with a means for tankers to continue to unload fuel throughout the project and maintain everyone’s safety in a high-risk environment.

BPC and CentrePort worked together with the fuel industry to agree a solution allowing two-week planned shipping outages and the development of a Matrix of Permitted Operations (MOPO). The MOPO is a mapping tool that enables everyone to understand which construction and wharf user activities are compatible with each other and what is to be avoided. This enables coordination of simultaneous fuel industry and construction activities under strict conditions to ensure safety.

Implementation of the MOPO is a great example of how a safety process can improve construction efficiency and productivity.
