Protective project team

Environmental protection has been critical to BPC’s Snells Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant project team, working alongside a coastal marine area and habitat for eels.

When new culverts were recently constructed under the plant’s access road, the road had to be kept open and the ecological and sediment control requirements carefully managed.

Supervisor Mike Finlay led the team relocating 194 eels before diverting the water course to the new culvert. When a pool was pumped out, the pumps were screened to avoid eels being caught in them. Under the direction of an ecologist from Bioresearches, the eels were caught in hand nets. As the pond was mucked out, the team carefully searched through the wet material to ensure the eels were all saved.
