BPC builds big
https://www.linkedin.com/feed/...The Activated Sludge Reactor (ASR) being constructed for Watercare at the Snells Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant project is believed to be the biggest precast structure ever built by BPC.
The ASR is a complex multi-tank structure with a footprint approximately 55m x 25m and up to 8m in height.
Project Engineer Natasha Van Nieuwenhuizen and her team decided that pre-casting the vertical walls would be faster to meet programme, be cost-efficient for Watercare, and easier because of the site’s limited space for heavy vehicle access, crane pads, and lay-down areas.
The complex build has required four cranes at various stages, including a 450-tonne mobile crane to lift the concrete panels that weigh up to 23 tonnes.
Project Manager Paul Ashcroft says the panels were placed on stilts, with reinforcing steel connecting through the exposed pile heads.
“Despite the heavy rainfall and storm events, this talented and resilient construction team is making excellent progress and staying safe,” Paul says.
