Waikato Freight Hub
Brian Perry Civil in conjunction with Higgins, constructed a 120m-long multi-span road bridge over the North Island Main Trunk Railway. Delivered by a local team, the project was initiated to enable access from the old State Highway 1 north of Hamilton to a new inland port.
The focal point of the project was the construction of the multi-span, BBO-designed bridge over the railway, with no Blocks of Line required.
The project required a range of works including:
- Earthworks
- Embankment fills
- Ground improvement through CFA piling
- Bored pile foundations
- MSE block retaining walls
- Three waters networks
- Pavement construction
- Wetlands upgrade
The project continued further into the new inland port and industrial area with 1km of new roadway and a large roundabout. All services to support multiple businesses facilities were required.
Due to the close proximity of the site to a waterway, strong environmental controls were implemented and maintained for the life of the project. This culminated in the upgrade of a large retention pond into a fully functioning wetland to process stormwater before entering the local waterway.
The project in numbers:
- 40,000m3 of earthworks
- 15no. 900m diameter bored piles to approximately 20m deep
- 5 piers and crosshead structures
- 24no. 50t 30m-long Super T beams were landed using a 400T crane.
- 2 cranes to tandem lift over the railway line
- 950m of mainline stormwater drainage
- 850m of gravity wastewater line
- 2km of PE water mains
- 2,500m2 of deep lift asphalt for the roundabout
- 6,540m2 of full pavement construction
