Pago Pago Service Wharf Rehabilitation

The previous wharf, built on sediment, had deteriorated due to years of increased port activity and operational usage. The structure was slowly sinking into the unstable seabed and eventually would have fallen into the sea. Originally the project was to strengthen the Service Wharf to be more structurally sound and to accommodate larger vessels, but following geotechnical investigations, recommendations were adopted to construct an entirely new Service Wharf.

Demolition of the existing structure was completed using a combination of a digger mounted rock breaker and pulveriser, utilising pontoons under the wharf to catch broken concrete. Silt screen and silt runoff controls were implemented, leading to zero environmental impacts across the course of the project.

Construction included 24no. 24” steel tube piles, 20” thick structural reinforced concrete slabs and down stand beams, drainage, and all auxiliary civil elements. We provided an alternate to the cement stabilised base course using a flowable fill, enabling us to proceed with slab works at an increased production rate.

The new wharf was delivered on time and within budget, to the satisfaction of the client. Despite being a high-profile project in the middle of town, the team were able to drive piles without disturbing the local legislature and other businesses that were situated close by.
