Wellington winners
Congratulations to our BPC teams who delivered the Matiu Somes Island, Kaitoke Flume Pipe Bridge, and James Smith Carpark projects – all winners at this year’s Civil Contractors New Zealand Wellington/Wairarapa Awards.
The Matiu Somes Island wharf replacement project in Wellington harbour won the $2.8 - $10M category. The judges said BPC deployed its engineering expertise to replace the historic 116-year-old wharf without compromising the island’s little blue penguin colony or sensitive natural environment. Completed on time and on budget, the project restored public access to the popular island sanctuary.
The seismic strengthening re-piling work for the central city James Smith Carpark won the $600,000 - $2.8M category. The judges were impressed with the team achieving the necessary pile depth of 18m with only 2.1m of headroom to work in.
The Multi Civil Contractors John Carson Memorial Health & Safety Award was won by our Kaitoke Flume Pipe Bridge project team. The judges recognised their safety protocols during a period in which abseilers cleared 1,300m² of rock and vegetation to prepare for the installation of rock anchors.
