Tight site requires top skills

BPC’s top-notch planning, communications, and operating skills are delivering for client Merck Sharp Dohme in a tight spot in Upper Hutt.

Our SR75 drill rig was used to install 1200mm dia CFA piles just 1.3m from an existing building to 8m depth. Not only was the space tight, but water, gas, and nitrogen lines had to be surveyed and protected from the 75+tonne rig. The challenges were also overhead, as the rig had to track beneath a permanent gantry between two buildings.

Project Manager James Brewer says there was just 3.7m of vertical space after the platform was built. “That left about 200mm clearance to squeeze a very large piling rig underneath the gantry, which the team managed without incident.”

“To complete the two piles on the other side of the gantry the rig had to be fully disassembled, tracked under the gantry, and reassembled. When those piles have been completed the rig will be disassembled again and transported to the other side of the building to complete a further six 1200mm diameter piles.

“It’s a congested site with many subcontractors working very closely together, so good communication and planning across all teams have been essential.”
