Supporting new migrants to succeed

BPC’s Better Together value was demonstrated with the support programme developed for seven new recruits from the Philippines to our Auckland Airport Pavement Renewal team.

As a migrant himself with English as a second language, the project’s Senior Health & Safety Advisor Jay Lauten understands the challenges of adjusting to a new country and a new construction workforce culture. He developed a programme to help the new recruits integrate into the team.

“We initiated basic English classes, from 6am to 7am, which gradually evolved into hazard management training,” Jay says. The team has also completed competence certificates in a range of skills. “Witnessing the growth and progress of the seven workers has reinforced my belief in the power of mentorship, guidance, and fostering a supportive environment.”
