Challenging crosshead construction
Having completed piling for the Whakawhirinaki Pipe Bridge foundations ahead of schedule, BPC’s team is pouring the six 1800mm diameter columns. Work is underway on two of the four crossheads, each measuring 10m x 3m x 2m, being constructed between the piers of the columns for the bridge structure to sit on.
Within the crosshead reinforcing cage, 162 36mm diameter galvanised threaded rods need to be installed to hold down the shear pin anchorage plates for the steel bridge sections. These bolts need to be installed with a tolerance of +/- 1.5mm, providing a challenge for the structures crew to fit in around the heavy reinforcing.
The bridge across Te Awa Kairangi (Hutt River) is a critical infrastructure project for Wellington Water.
