Delivering Whakawhirinaki for Wellington Water

Brian Perry Civil is proud to be delivering the newly named Whakawhirinaki, to ensure the Wellington region’s water infrastructure is well-equipped to respond in the event of a major earthquake or weather event that could affect water supply.

The bridge will carry bulk water supplies across Te Awa Kairangi/Hutt River as well as a shared walking and cycling track.

A karakia and naming ceremony was held to bless the project and name the new bridge. Taranaki Whanui Chair Kura Moeahu said the name means ‘to lean against something, trust in something, depend on or rely on’. “Whirinaki is also the original name of the region, so by naming this bridge Whakawhirinaki we are saying we trust in it and rely on it given the huge responsibility it has to carry our region’s water through Hutt Valley and Waiwhetu to its final destination.”

All of Upper Hutt, Stokes Valley, Porirua, and much of Wellington City’s water supply comes from the Te Marua water treatment plant before travelling along a critical bulk water pipeline that crosses the river at Silverstream.
