Precast soffit perfectly placed
Meticulous planning and top teamwork ensured a 15.8m x 7m reinforced concrete soffit was installed on top of five piles by BPC’s team delivering the Seaview Wharf upgrade for Centreport.
The 70T soffit was poured at our Otaihanga precast yard, expertly transported overnight by PTS Logistics to the wharf site, loaded onto the jack-up barge, and then lowered into place.
Construction Manager Gabriela Koneski says the challenges were considerable. “Our window with the weather was very limited, tolerances between the pile cap holes and the piles were small, and we had many starter bars coming out of the soffit and the piles. Even doing the prep works welding corbels onto the casings was challenging, with the crew constantly in a tidal zone. It was a huge team effort, and I am so proud of what everyone delivered together.”
“The structures crew ensured that construction was correct, as well as welding the corbels. A 250T crane was efficiently loaded onto our Manahau barge, making it possible to transport the soffit without a hitch. The piling crew helped with lifting and transporting the structure from the landside into position.”
The pile cap that will sit on top of the soffit will be 1.8m high and contain 140m3 of concrete.
