Porirua WWTP upgraded
BPC’s team has completed their work on the Porirua Wastewater Treatment Plant, with the shutdown and re-commissioning of the aeration ponds.
Project Engineer Ngahina Kapua said the decaying aeration manifold was replaced with a glass-reinforced pipe, welded by glass fibre layers coated in epoxy resin rather than standard welding.
“We had a tight time frame to shut down the aeration basin to successfully transfer the oxygen over to the new aeration manifold,” Ngahina said. “We had two teams set up, one cutting the old diffusers and one at the tee section. Once the tee was in place, it was welded to the new manifold pipes.”
Ngahina said the plant is now using less power to operate, as the old leaky pipe required three blower units to supply the oxygen. “Saving power and regulating bacteria – a win/win for the client.”
