Demolishing decaying wharf in Napier

A BPC team has demolished Napier’s decaying Jull Wharf and jetty and built a new rock revetment to protect the existing retaining walls from further degradation.

The team used excavators with attachments such as hydraulic breakers and grapples to first demolish the old concrete wharf structure, then build the new revetment using locally sourced limestone rock.

Before demolition work began, penguin experts kept a close eye out for any kororā nesting in the area. The new revetment has chain-link mesh over the rock surface to stop the penguins from taking up residence as the area is to be developed to display historical waka and storyboards about traditional navigation practices.

Ross Montagu, Ryan Bayley, and Clayton Kruger delivered the project for Napier City Council.
