Building island access

We’re proud to be building a new wharf to provide access to Matiu Somes Island, a Department of Conservation managed predator-free scientific and historic reserve in Wellington harbour.

Our team have demolished the 116-year-old wharf and are installing 19 piles for its replacement, as well as constructing a boat ramp and seawall. The 600mm diameter piles are being constructed from BPC’s jack-up barge Taupapa.

Environmental and biosecurity considerations underpin every aspect of our team’s work, with clothing, bags, all materials and equipment being scrutinised before arriving on the island.

We’re looking forward to getting the project completed later this year so the public can enjoy Matiu Somes Island again over the summer.
