Spanning the Hutt River

The Whakawhirinaki Silverstream Pipe Bridge is set to take its full form across Te Awa Kairangi (Hutt River) later this month, when the 100m long central arched steel span is lifted into place by a 500T crane.

BPC’s team is busy pre-assembling the bridge, which was manufactured by Eastbridge Ltd in Napier. The central arched span will connect into the 60m section already installed on the western side of the river. A temporary causeway will be created out of the river gravel so the massive crane can track forward while lifting the 160T central arch into place. Then the final 40m truss for the eastern side will be lifted into place to complete the bridge crossing.

BPC is delivering the project for Wellington Water. The bridge will provide a pedestrian and cycling pathway as well as carrying the new water pipe.
