We’re currently undergoing the tricky task of investigating upgrades to a historic wharf. To make this possible, we brought in our Engineering Services survey and spatial team. They were able to complete a laser scan model of the wharf to fully understand the structure.
Although the team had limited access to the work site with tides, ship movements, ferry operations and weather, Digital Engineer Jonathan Kubiak says they were able to achieve excellent results. “We established a robust control network and produced detailed laser scans both above and below the wharf. We used static laser scanning above the wharf and Simultaneous Localisation And Mapping (SLAM) laser scanning below it and captured extensive panoramic photography above and below the wharf.”
Engineering Services’ expertise and powerful digital tools allowed Jonathan and the team to collect the data under the wharf at pace – and entirely at night. “Laser scanning and, especially, SLAM can be very challenging when on the water. The scanner doesn’t know what should and shouldn’t be moving so there’s a bit of nuance to getting good data. Our tools ensured this was possible, and the client could be assured of the scan’s quality.”
