Arch bridge installed
A massive 100m long central arched steel bridge span has been successfully lifted into place across Te Awa Kairangi (Hutt River).
Working with Eastbridge Ltd, Holmes, and GHD, BPC’s team is delivering the Whakawhirinaki Silverstream Pipe bridge for Wellington Water. The 160T arched steel span, which was assembled on site, was lifted into place by a 500T Titan crane. It connected into the 60m section already installed on the western side of the river. The final 40m truss for the eastern side was then lifted into place to complete the bridge crossing.
Project Manager Hayden Chapman said the central span lift went exactly to plan thanks to the team’s meticulous planning, excellent communications, and teamwork.
When completed, the bridge will carry the main water supply for Wellington as well as providing pedestrian and cycling access across the river.
