Wairoa River Bridge Cycleway

Brian Perry Civil proudly delivered the fabrication and installation a new purpose-built cycleway and pedestrian bridge for Western Bay of Plenty District Council. The 177m bridge consists of seven spans of steel truss crossing the culturally significant Wairoa River. The bridge forms part of the larger cycleway scheme between Ōmokoroa to Tauranga.

Brian Perry Civil engaged DC Structures Studio during the Tender stage to develop an alternative solution, which reduced the weight of the structure by 50%, also providing 20% cost savings.

The project had significant risks and complexity, working at heights over water during the Covid Level 3 restrictions. Our constructability inputs into the design and the work of our subcontractors helped overcome these challenges. Successful delivery was achieved by coming up with a lightweight steel truss and working effectively with stakeholders such as Waka Kotahi, local hapu, Ngāti Kahu, and New Zealand Heavy Haulage Association.

The construction works involved 15m deep H-Piles at the abutments and a large bespoke substructure to support the cycle bridge and counterweight pipes.

Detailed planning and design led to the successful installation of the structure. This was exemplified through the construction of V-Pier barge frame. The barge carried the V-Piers as they were floated into place, being guided by jet skis and a boat. Detailed temporary works were completed to ensure safe buoyancy and manoeuvrability of the barge with the almost 20tonne payload onboard. The bespoke steel frame weight approx. 6tonnes and was made up of 610UC beams. This was fabricated offsite and assembled onsite. It was then lifted into place using a 130tonne mobile crane. The frame not only held the complex shape upright, it also linked the two 40 foot barge sections together.
