Tower crane assembled at Kaitoke Pipe Bridge

A 22m tower crane with a 64.2m luffing boom has been assembled at BPC’s Kaitoke Pipe Bridge project, north of Wellington.

Project Manager Jack Gillard says the trucks delivering the crane’s components to site had to navigate through the crew filming Taika Waititi’s Time Bandits in Kaitoke Regional Park.

“Some of the trucks had to wait about 10 minutes while they finished shooting some scenes – not the typical sort of holdup we encounter,” he said.

The crane is a Favco M860D, able to lift 32T at a 32m radius, and 11T at a 62.5 radius.

“This crane will allow us to reach the northern side of the Hutt River,” Jack says. “It’s first job will be loading out loose rock on the slope of the northern side of the river. We’ll then use it to lift an 8T piling rig over the river to build the new bridge’s northern foundations.”

Smith Crane & Construction mobilised a 100T crawler crane to site to assemble the tower crane as the narrow site meant a mobile crane couldn’t be used.
