Location: Auckland
Contract Value: $1.6m
Completed: Nov 2009
Main Contractor: Brian Perry Civil

Waitakere dam is one of the ten water reservoirs supplying bulk water to the Auckland territorial authorities and is located near the north end of the Waitakere ranges.  It is approximately 25m high concrete gravity arch and has a capacity of 1.8 million cubic metres.  The original cast iron pipework had not been upgraded since the dam was built in 1910.  In order to comply with an updated resource consent and dam safety procedures, Brian Perry Civil replaced the pipework inside the dam, added a new pipe from the bottom intake and constructed a concrete valve chamber and installed specialized valves.

Project Scope

  • Remove roof of valve tower
  • Replace existing cast iron pipework with epoxy lined steel and install associated valves and actuators
  • Under-water construction to refurbish raw water intakes
  • Install new 'dam safety line' pipework
  • Construct concrete valve chamber - 5m * 6m * 5m high - adjacent to Waitakere Stream
  • Install free discharge valve in chamber
  • Install compensation flow line and needle valve
  • Construct new valve tower roof
  • Install new electrical and electronic equipment
  • Connect new pipework to existing Raw Water Main

A popular tourist site, the pedestrians were diverted around the worksite, maintaining access to the bush tracks in the area.
