2700 stone columns up to 11 metres long were constructed in volcanic soils to reduce ground liquefaction potential under the new power station.

The stone columns were constructed using the wet vibroflot method.  The work, which was undertaken in joint venture with Keller of Australia, was completed one month early.

The contract also included all siteworks and drainage and construction of reinforced concrete foundations for the power plant, buildings and pipe supports.  The total concrete poured was 1700m3 for the generator base.
