Contract Value: $8.5m

Strengthening of the Grafton Bridge was carried out as part of the Central Connector Project, a 3 km bus rapid transit corridor connecting Auckland CBD and Newmarket via major destinations.

Work Scope included:

  • 400+ No. concrete spall repairs
  • 850+ linear metres of Epoxy Resin injected cracks
  • Loose shotcrete removal across structure
  • FRP externally bonded beam strengthening
  • 18 column extensions
  • 20 columns' foundation improvements
  • 6 shear keys and 4 cantilever links
  • 6 replacement bearings
  • 17,000 m² of anti-carbonation coating to the whole structure
  • Replacement deck expansion joints
  • Resurface carriageway and footpaths
  • Painting and cleaning whole of structure

The iconic structure was kept open for public pedestrian access during the project.  Significant public and professional interest in the project meant a high level of commitment to stakeholder management was maintained by BPC.

Works were undertaken throughout the existing historic graveyard which required protection and management with the Historic Places Trust.

Motorway closures / possessions at night for access to all spans east of the Main Arch.  Access to structure was undertaken by multiple methods (including scaffolding and abseiling).

The 12 month contract (including significant increase in scope due to the poor condition of the bridge) was completed within 11 months.
