Location: Auckland
Contract Value: $1.9 million
Completed: Oct 2000
Main Contractor: Fletcher Engineering

Brian Perry Civil installed the piles for the new Golden Bay Cement bulk storage facilities.  The site is adjacent to the Bledisloe Container Terminal on reclaimed land where piles had been previously installed for a proposed cool store.

Work scope:

Service Centre.

  • 64 No x 600mm dia x12m CFA piles

Bulk Store.

  • 684 x H PILES ( 360UBP 108) driven to depths from 12m - 20m
  • 190m of sheet pile wall supporting 3.0m high excavation

Tower Crane

  • 4 No X 760mm diam CFA piles

Service Centre

Prior to installing the CFA piles a 600mm dia test pile was installed and tested to a load of 3900kn.

The 68 CFA piles were installed using a Soilmec SR30 drill rig. The SR30 has a computer which continuously logs the drilling information as the pile is being drilled and then logs the concrete volume as the augers are being extracted.

Bulk Store

The extent of the existing piles was discovered as the bulk dig was carried out. This required the layout of the H piles and the sheet piles to be changed.

Brian Perry had two piling speads and a 90ton service crane to install the sheet piles and the H piles in the bulk store. The bulk store site was divided into three long narrow corridors which precluded using piling leaders. The piles were installed into the Waitemata sediments with vibrating hammers and then driven to the design driving resistances of 2000Kn and 2500Kn with hydraulic piling hammers. PDA testing was conducted across the site on 10% of the pile.
