One of the country’s largest current construction projects, the $410 million Victoria Park Tunnel involves construction of a 440m cut and cover tunnel underneath Victoria Park. The work will create three new northbound lanes between Victoria Park and St Mary’s Bay, allowing southbound traffic use of the existing four lanes across the Viaduct. The project will reduce traffic delays at one of the most congested parts of the Auckland motorway network.

Brian Perry Civil, through Fletcher Construction, is the lead contractor on the project as part of an Alliance with NZTA, Beca Infrastructure, Higgins and Parsons Brinkerhoff.

As well as significant piling and retaining wall construction, the project involves: considerable services relocation; protection of historic buildings; new highway construction; building noise walls; and a new pedestrian overbridge structure.

A high profile project, Victoria Park Tunnel is part of the Government’s seven roads of national significance.

Work progress in May 2010

A significant month for this project has involved the following key items of work:

  1. The first 5 concrete beams of the tunnel roof were installed in the vicinity of Beaumont Street. This is a major milestone for the project.
  2. Torrential downpours in the last week of May diverted a lot of machinery and work crews into water draining and pumping mode, alongside normal activity.
  3. The piling crews opened up a new work face within the Victory Christian Church area.
  4. The piling crews continue their great progress through the middle and at the northern end of Victoria Park.
  5. The retaining walls at the southern end of the site have been completed.
  6. Culvert crews have been installing culvert units at the southern end of the site including the critical work at Victoria Street. Crews have then been preparing for the Freemans Bay Stormwater crossing of the tunnel.
  7. So far: 18% of secant pile walls completed; 11% of tension piles completed; and 22% of D-walls are constructed.
