Tauranga has a fast-growing population and current wastewater facilities will not be able to cope with future demand. To solve this, Tauranga City Council has developed the $106 million Southern Pipeline Project.
The 20km pipeline will take sewage from Tauriko / Greerton to the Te Maunga Wastewater Treatment Plant. Brian Perry Civil is currently working on the first package of work of the project, building the $6.6 million Maleme Street Pump Station.
The pump station will consist of: a 1200 cubic metre underground storage tank; a 220 cubic metre pump well; a service building; and associated pumps, pipework, tanks and valves.
The pump station will work to pump wastewater along the new pipeline when the pipeline is completed in 2013. Before the Southern Pipeline is built however, the Maleme Street Pump Station will serve as an emergency store for overflow wastewater from the current strained pipeline system. It will act as a holding point for overflow before pumping it back into the existing system.
The pump station provides extra challenges for construction because it needs to be built to first handle its initial role, and then seamlessly slip into its final role within the new Southern Pipeline.
Work progress in May 2010
- Lots of activity on constructing the concrete roof this month. The first of the precast roof panels started arriving this month and installation began at the northern end of the tank. As the month ends, all precast roof panels are in place, which required a great final push from the team. Concrete pouring of the roof is progressing in between the rain.
- A big effort went into backfilling of Biofilter around the site. We installed 100 cu.m of metal and 100 cu.m of bark evenly on site within a limited timeframe in variable weather, which was a great achievement.
- Our carpentry team were busy down deep in the wet walls putting things together before the sandblasting and painting crews move in.
- Lots of subcontractors on site this month, including sandblasters and painters. All storage tanks have been completely sandblasted. The painters have made progress firstly on the storage tanks and have now split their work between the storage tanks and the wet walls.
- Other subcontractors have been busy installing the mild steel and stainless steel pipework.
