Kings Wharf was constructed in 1908; after a century it required a total sub-structure refurbishment and deck replacement by way of post tensioned deck slabs. Water had cause rot to both decking and substructure where the original hardwood sarking and cobbled surface had failed over the years.

The scope of work included:

  • Demolition of 7000m2 of decking. Once substructure refurbishment was completed installation of plywood as deck slab formwork.
  • Installation of 185 steel channels and UC's as structural strengthening members.
  • Remove 550 original hardwood joists and replace with new hardwood joists. Remove and replace 400 metres of damaged cap beams.
  • Install drainage for new slabs Install new HDPE Watermain and fire hydrants.
  • Various pile repairs including: 10 driven hardwood piles, pile top splicing, pile splinting and reinforced concrete jackets around piles.
  • Shoring the reclamation wall with 2no 80m3 mass filled concrete blocks to halt the reclamation settlement onto the wharf preventing further damage.
  • Rebuild the southern end of wharf - from piling too reinforced concrete slab, curbs and bollards.
  • The installations of 4no 75 tonne flush mounted bollards into the wharf deck.

Installation of driven plastic piles (4no) and beams on Kings Wharf as a knuckle fender. Installation of 16no plastic piles and plastic beams as a full fender system on the Aotea Quay container wharf
