Work Scope:

This $20 million project is a key roading and infrastructure development within Hamilton City. The finished arterial road will complete the northern section of the ring road that bypasses Hamilton central for SH1 traffic.

Brian Perry Civil is a subcontractor on the project, responsible for work to a value of $6 million. Key items of work include: laying over 1km of stormwater pipeline and culverts; 700m of 1m dia sewer lines; 1100 sq. m of keystone retaining wall; over 5km of watermains and construction of a 94m long pedestrian underpass.

The major challenges that the project presents are: dewatering required of very deep existing drainage; backfilling with in-situ material and meeting the required compaction standards; and keeping up momentum while being presented with frequent design changes.

Work Progress in May 2010:

  1. All internal keystone walls have now been constructed – a major milestone for the project. This means that close to half of the total walls are now standing.
  2. The stormwater crew had a great challenge this month. Four 1.5m dia stormwater pipes were installed across a large ‘hole’ caused by a peat layer that required infilling. The large pipes were challenging to install due to two bundles of existing 33kV cables that ran perpendicular to the pipes. Creative thinking from the team allowed us to install the pipes successfully.
  3. Further good progress has been made in laying the watermain pipes. The crew have safely negotiated underneath and around an existing large service trench.
  4. Continuing steady progress on laying the 600mm dia bulk water main.
  5. The 250mm dia watermain is now installed over the service bridge and testing is underway.
  6. Wingwalls of the service bridge are being formed.
